Training with a friend or group is great! It is a way to meet like-minded people but studies have shown that people who work out in groups are more likely to reach their fitness goals! Here are some reason why working with a group or with friends can increase your fitness!

Creates Accountability

It is easy to let ourselves off the hook. Too hot, too cold, raining, kids. There are a ton of reason why we make excuses to not go and workout. Having a partner or group of friends working out together makes it less about the individual and more about the group. Appointments are usually kept when working out with a friend or group because of the let down factor. We usually want to please others (to a certain extent) and not be the one to let down the group, so we show up. Also, we do not want to be left behind. If our friends are making progress, we want to be apart from that process. Friends can help motivate.

Learn More Exercise Routines and Techniques

We all can run into a rut. Same routine day in and day out. Although there is something said to consistency, a little change here and there never hurt anyone. There is the old adage, “If you are the smartest one in the room, you are in the wrong room.” Same applies to fitness. Everyone brings something to the table. A new exercise or a coaching technique that changes how we look at fitness. This also takes the “scary” out of new exercises. If we see a friend doing something, chances are we are going to try it. Have someone coach us through it not only increases our chances of success but also decreases the chances of injury.

Friendly Competition Can Increase Intensity

I’ll just leave this here…

Anything You Can Do (Annie Get Your Gun)

Song by Betty Hutton and Howard Keel

Annie:
Anything you can do, I can do better.
I can do anything better than you.

Frank: No you can’t.
Annie: Yes, I can.
Frank: No, you can’t.
Annie: Yes, I can.
Frank: No, you can’t.
Annie: Yes, I can, Yes, I can!

Frank:
Anything you can be, I can be greater.
Sooner or later I’m greater than you.

Annie: No, you’re not.
Frank: Yes, I am.
Annie: No, you’re not.
Frank: Yes, I am.
Annie: No, you’re not!.
Frank: Yes, I am, Yes, I am!

……

Help Push Through A Rut

Sometimes progress can be slow. Some call it a rut, others a plateau. These can be devastating. Have a friend or colleague can help minimize that feeling of “getting nowhere and fast.” We all have been there. Body hurts, brain hurts, and just no motivation. Sometimes all we need is a helping hand to get us through these times and a group is great for that. Friends can help motivate to get us through those slow progress times to keep us focused and consistent.

In the end, working out with a group allows the possibility to add a little more fun to a routine. A joke, smile, or positive affirmation can really brighten an otherwise tough workout of session. It allows the ability to push harder and longer with any given exercise and help maintain a level of accountability for everyone involved. So before your next workout, grab a friend, grab a barbell and get after it!
